Issue
As a conversation goes wrong — repeated misunderstandings, unresolved requests, unhelpful clarifications — the user’s tone becomes progressively more frustrated (shorter messages, capitalization, explicit complaints, sarcasm), and the agent fails to detect this shift or adjust its behavior in response, continuing with the same pacing, tone, and approach that caused the frustration in the first place. The failure isn’t the original mistake but the agent’s blindness to the user’s escalating emotional state as a signal that its current approach isn’t working.

- User’s message length, punctuation, and word choice show clear escalating frustration markers (all-caps, repeated punctuation, “I already said,” direct complaints) across turns
- Agent’s tone and approach remain unchanged before and after these markers appear
- No de-escalation attempt (acknowledging the frustration, offering to change approach, offering a human handoff) occurs despite clear signals
- Session ends in abandonment or an explicit complaint rather than resolution once frustration has visibly escalated
- Sentiment trend across a session is a strong predictor of negative outcome that goes unused by the agent in real time
Root Cause
Standard turn-by-turn response generation optimizes for answering the current message’s literal content, not for tracking the trajectory of the user’s emotional state across the conversation as a distinct signal that should change behavior. Without an explicit sentiment-tracking layer that persists across turns and feeds back into response strategy (slow down, acknowledge, change approach, offer escalation), each individual response can look reasonable in isolation while the conversation as a whole ignores an increasingly obvious pattern that the current approach is failing the user.
