Temporal Inconsistency in Video/Multi-Frame Analysis
Issue: Model Fails to Track Object Identity or State Changes Across Frames
Frequency: Very Common
Symptoms
- Object appears in Frame 1, disappears in Frame 2 (model loses track)
- Position/appearance changes inconsistently
- No understanding of object motion
- High variance in predictions across consecutive frames
Root Cause Analyzing video frames independently ignores temporal continuity. Models don’t learn that objects persist, move smoothly, or maintain identity across frames. Temporal reasoning requires explicit sequence models (RNNs, transformers); standard vision models operate on static images.
Example
Scenario: Video object tracking for surveillance
Frame 1: Person identified at position (100, 200)
Frame 2: Person moved slightly to (110, 205)
Model: Fails to recognize same person; treats as new object
Expected: Smooth tracking; consistent ID across frames
Impact: Lost person tracking; security vulnerability
Key Statistics
- ID consistency across frames: 60-80% (depends on motion)
- Jitter in position predictions: ±10-20 pixels frame-to-frame
- Dropout (lost tracking): 10-20% of videos
Mitigation Strategies
- Temporal Models: Use 3D CNNs or recurrent architectures
- Optical Flow: Estimate motion between frames; guide tracking
- Kalman Filtering: Smooth predictions across frames
- Multi-Frame Context: Process N consecutive frames jointly
Metrics
- ID consistency (same object maintains same ID)
- Temporal smoothness (variance of position changes)
Alerts
- ID switches >5% of video → P2
