Issue: Agent Incorrectly Interprets Pauses and Silence

Frequency: Very Common

Symptoms

  • Agent interrupts user during thinking pause
  • Long silence treated as end of input
  • User cut off mid-thought
  • Agent asks “Are you still there?” too quickly
  • Natural pauses trigger timeout

Root Cause Voice agents must detect when the user has finished speaking, but this is ambiguous. A pause might mean the user is thinking, taking a breath, or has finished. Fixed silence thresholds (e.g., 2 seconds = done) don’t account for context—complex questions need more thinking time. Too short triggers interruptions; too long creates awkward waits.

  2. Acoustic Breath/Filler Discrimination: Distinguish true silence from breath sounds, mouth noise, or filled pauses (“um,” “uh”) using acoustic features, treating filled pauses as a “still speaking” signal rather than counting them as part of the silence duration. Trade-off: adds an acoustic classification step and can misfire on unusual breathing patterns or non-standard fillers across languages/accents.
  3. Explicit Wait Cues: When the agent asks a question likely to require lookup or thought (“what’s your account number?”), pair it with an explicit verbal cue (“take your time”) that both sets user expectations and signals the system to extend its silence tolerance for that turn.

Premature-Interruption Tracking: Log every case where the agent responds/reprompts during what turns out to be a user pause rather than true end-of-turn (detected via the user immediately continuing/protesting); use this to recalibrate per-context thresholds rather than a single global constant.
  2. Progressive Check-In Before Hard Timeout: Instead of jumping straight to “Are you still there?” at a fixed silence duration, use a graduated approach — a soft acknowledgment tone or short pause extension first, then a gentle check-in, then a longer timeout — so genuine task-related pauses (searching for a card) aren’t treated identically to abandonment.
  3. Per-Context Threshold Effectiveness Review: Regularly compare configured pause thresholds against observed actual pause distributions per prompt type (from production data) and adjust thresholds where there’s a persistent mismatch (e.g., “let me check” prompts consistently seeing 8-12s pauses against a 2s threshold).

Architecture Patterns

  3. Task Pause Timeout Abandonment (P1): Condition - abandonment rate following a hard timeout exceeds 25% for lookup-style prompts. Action: Extend timeout for identified prompt category, add progressive check-in step before hard timeout.
