Root Cause Many characters are visually similar, especially in certain fonts or at low resolutions. The model cannot distinguish between them without additional context.

INV-\d{4}-[A-Z]\d{4}) and constrain the OCR decoder’s character set at recognition time rather than only validating after the fact, so ambiguous glyphs are resolved using the position-specific alphabet (digit-only positions can never emit a letter). Trade-off: requires a known format per field/template; free-form fields get no benefit. - Checksum/check-digit validation: For IDs with a checksum (invoice numbers, account numbers with a Luhn/mod-11 digit), verify the checksum on the extracted string and try the top-N confusable substitutions (0↔O, 1↔l↔I) until the checksum passes. Trade-off: only applicable to ID schemes that include a check digit.
- Context-aware dictionary correction: Post-process extracted alphanumeric strings against a domain dictionary or known-ID lookup (e.g., existing invoice numbers, product codes) so likely substitutions are corrected before the value is used. Trade-off: risks “correcting” a genuinely novel but valid ID into an existing one if the dictionary isn’t kept current.

- Field validation failure monitoring: Track validation failure rates by field type (numeric field containing letters, ID lookup misses) and alert when a specific field or source spikes, since that usually signals a systematic confusable-character issue rather than random noise.
- Manual correction rate tracking: Monitor the rate at which human reviewers correct a specific character position or field across documents; a persistent correction pattern (e.g., always fixing a
0→O) indicates the confidence threshold or confusable-set handling needs retuning. - Ground-truth sampling audits: Periodically A/B test extraction output against labeled ground truth samples specifically containing confusable characters, tracking substitution-specific accuracy rather than only aggregate accuracy.
Architecture Patterns
- Confidence-gated human-in-the-loop review queue: Route any field where a confusable-character position has low per-character confidence to review before it reaches downstream systems (e.g., invoice lookup), rather than allowing a plausible-looking but wrong ID to silently fail lookup.
- Checksum-guided candidate re-ranking: Architect extraction to emit top-K character candidates per position, then use checksum/dictionary validation to re-rank and select the candidate that produces a valid, resolvable ID.
