Issue: AI System Fails to Detect When Visible Text Doesn’t Match Encoded Barcode Data

Frequency: Common

Symptoms

  • W-2 visible wages don’t match barcode-encoded wages
  • Tax return DCN barcode doesn’t match form data
  • Bank statement QR code contains different account info
  • Pay stub barcode differs from printed amounts
  • Document passed visual validation but barcode reveals tampering

Root Cause Many mortgage documents contain barcodes or QR codes that encode key data for machine reading. When fraudsters alter visible text (changing $50,000 to $80,000), they often don’t know about or can’t modify the embedded barcode. AI systems that only OCR visible text miss this critical verification layer.
